Industry “Impulse” Review
The “impulse system” considers price “inertia” versus a moving average, and price “momentum” via the rate at which shorter moving averages are converging or diverging. Applied weekly to major industry groups, this gives a sense of market internals. When both indicators (EMA and MACD-H) tick up for the week, the reading is green; when both decline, it’s red.
“Jock” reports:
This week, 5 major industries scored green, 3 were red -- for a “net green” count of 2 (compared to 1 last week). Real Estate stayed red for the 4th straight week. Banking and Specialty Retail just moved from neutral to red.25 Cara 100 stocks were green, while 31 were red. By contrast, 11 of the Dow 65 (industrials + transports + utilities) were green, while 26 were red. 17 of the S&P 100 components were green, while 41 were red.

Jock,
The Impulse System looks very useful. Is there a site that allows you to plug in any stock or do you derive this yourself?
Thanks,
Jack

Jack --
Through his site (elder.com) Dr. Alexander Elder offers (paid) software, webinars and seminars, all involving the "impulse system". In his seminar I learned how he uses this each weekend to review industries and indices. To learn more, I'd first read Alex'es book, Come into My Trading Room. Alex also has software for various charting packages which show the impulse system. If you use TC-2007, I can share a (free) formula which makes it easy to get "impulse" readings on any watchlist or index. While not a silver bullet, I think it's a very useful approach. Similarly, Alex'es books are well-reasoned and honest coverage of the challenge facing traders - Jock

I decided to change the heading after the comment made by "debianman" led to discourse by others in the Community. What we participate in here is discourse. Would you care to comment?

Any reaction to the MASSIVE BCE Takeover!!!!
HPE ("Humongous Private Equity") strikes again.
It amazes me that the whole reason the Canadian government decided to shut down the Royalty Trusts was because of the announced intentention of BCE and Telus to become them:
http://markevanstech.com/2006/11/01/telus-bce-income-trusts-killed/
Now, Telus (who bid for and lost) can't become a Royalty Trust and BCE has basically been sold off to foreigners (Providence Equity Partners and Madison Dearborn Partners):
http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/070630/canada_bce.html?.v=5
Once again, big government interferes with the operation of markets, and unintended consequences ensue. For Canada, it has resulted in an inordinate amount of foreign ownership of important assets:

Lots of hype going on over Apple's new iPhone and some of it may be deserved. I don't personally care because I tend to be a "Walden Pond" (see link#2 below for free text) type of person rather than an iPhone type (if such exists at this point in marketing). On the other hand of the hype, Jeffrey Hirsch has some rather blunt commentary at link#1. Enjoy both links.

Jock, that's pure mathematical poetry. ;)
Regarding the P&F triple bottom, I just noted that P&F theory considers this a more powerful signal than a double bottom breakdown.
It's also evident from the daily chart that this index has been in a downtrend since April. If it keeps trending down, I see some support at 128.
For the optimists still among us, this activity is all within a well-defined long-term range.
My (increasingly devaluing) 2 cents.
Regarding Ron Paul, I like his views on economic policy, but if he truly wants to transcend "politics as usual" he'll need to seriously reconsider his position on global warming.
