The Quality of HB&B Research, Tues., Mar. 13, 2007, 10:53 AM
When research gets published by one of the parts of Humungous Bank & Broker that makes the reader say, “I’ve learned something here,” then it must be good.
At various times in the past couple years, I have read quality research from firms like UBS, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, RBC and BMO that I decided to upload to share with all readers. That exercise ceased three months ago when a couple of those firms asked politely that I remove it. Rather than invite a second, less friendly, shoe to drop, I complied. Then, I thought, there is a principle here in that this is all copyrighted material, so why name the two complainants. I decided to stop the uploading practice altogether.
I had hoped to contact all these firms to try to work a solution of some sort, but other factors, particularly time and health, came into play. At this point, I don’t think I’ll pursue the matter. Instead, I’m going to set up an e-mail list for sharing the few pieces of HB&B research that I get that I believe should be widely read.
If you wish to be put on an e-mail list for selected research reports (sometimes a couple MB in size, so be careful for what you wish), please send me an e-mail with the one word RESEARCH in the subject line. BCara@BillCara.com
We’ll start with yesterday’s report on the housing and mortgage industry problems, produced by Ivy Zelman of Credit Suisse. Mrs. Zelman is a Managing Director and Equity Research Analyst responsible for covering 22 homebuilding, building products and furniture companies. In 1995, 1996 and 1997, she achieved 3rd place in the Institutional Investors All-American Research Team vote, moving to 2nd team in 1998. For six consecutive years, beginning in 1999, Ms. Zelman has been ranked number one housing analyst in the institutional investor poll. She also ranked 3rd in the Greenwich Associates Institutional Research Services Poll for 1995 and 1996, placed second in 1997 and 1999, and took first place in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
Also, I intend to publish notes taken at PDAC by Jock, Jake and myself, once I gather them all and edit them. My head cold since the weekend has put me back in bed since after I produced the WIR on Sunday though, so bear with me.
