BillCara.com ETF list, Tues., Feb. 27, 2007, 10:40 AM
I have been working to create my own version of Investertech.com, called BillCara2.com. There will be new skins, and new applications, on top of an old and time-proven database. The presentation layer will focus on ETF’s, GICS Sectors and Cara 100 groups.
There will be, when I have finished, quick navigation to charts, news and opinions. Give me a month, and I hope to say I’m proud to be able to call it mine.
I will be focused on ETF’s because this is a part of the stock market that is quickly growing in importance. Retail traders are becoming more independent in their trading, and will increasingly use these instruments for personal wealth management purposes.
In addition, Humungous Bank & Broker, which claims to be working for the Little Guy, is actually introducing these ETF’s by the hundreds. Why? Well, the sell-side of Wall Street would much rather the retail investor remain buyers of their mutual funds (Assets Under Management) or accounts being advised by their salespeople (aka “investment advisors”), which they refer to as Assets Under Administration. So HB&B is bringing out more ETF’s because they do a humungous trading business with quant-based hedge funds. These are the funds that are computer savvy – the ones that are more computer-based than say human directed.
Computers are built for number crunching, and what is an ETF but a combination of numbers that can be sliced and diced by investing style (Value? Growth? Balanced?), by Sector (GICS from #10 to #55), by Geography (every region and major country of the world), by customized construct (eg, Value Line Timeliness; Clean Energy; and the like), and for Bonds, Currencies, Commodities, Dividends, and on and on.
Yes, the world of algorithmic trading salivates for the numbers coming from these ETF’s. By comparison, mere retail investors lose neurons by the day and cannot hope to keep up. Big Blue is a computer system that blew away the world’s grand chess masters, so how can the Average Joe hope to keep up with these Gnome-owned algo trading programs with trillions of dollars on the line?
In any event, here is the list of 898 ETF’s that a reader sent us this morning.
Morgan Stanley maintains a database of 354 of them. I uploaded their first quarterly report in November, but was kindly asked (seriously, they were quite professional) to remove my link, which I did. However, I have reviewed that list and come up with my own, which is 244 long, broken into 36 unique types. Besides printing the list below, I am, as I said, building this list into the presentation layer (“skin” if you wish – which is a new way of saying I have skin in the game) of BillCara2.com.
Regardless of HB&B motives, or the objectives of the Gnomes, I am hoping that my community has one place to go (BillCara2.com) to do their own slicing and dicing of the ETF market. In time they will see links to News and Opinions. The opinions will be mine, and maybe some of yours as well. Besides, I will be here to take your requests for changes in the way all data is presented on my new charting service.
Here is the list. I have also added the Cara 100 Global Best Companies.

bigswede,
try www.etfconnect.com for very good etf coverage.

OH Boy! Can't wait. I don't think there are over 350 etfs yet, the 8oo plus list is when the text list is linked...and that includes lots of CEFs....which can be helpful.. My wish list:
1. Use CEFS to fill current voids of important asset classes: bonds emerging mkts, small cap intl, frontier countries, selected commodities, etc
2. Identification of etfs which represent current fundamental value/low pe's...dogs of dow analog
3. Group selection to run relative strength analysis. As these etfs come pouring out, less will be more. Would be wonderful for a wiser eye than myself to have the cara100/or less worthy of a stable group to crunch to spot rotation, weakness, and strength.
4.Internal analysis to help determine to sell or to pass a buy signal.

Currency Shares started a Yen ETF a couple of weeks ago (symbol FXY). May be useful for those of us who believe the forthcoming bear will unwind all those carry trades and raise the yen.

Bill,
I've been reading this blog for some time and this is my first comment.
I applaud you for creating your own view of ETF performance rather than rely on Investertech. Investertech's data feeds have produced bad data and I have communicated that to them several times (which they did fix by the way). Also their ETF data is incomplete -- not all ETF's are listed. But its not only Investertech, but almost ALL mainstream sites have incomplete ETF data. Go to Yahoo! Finance and you see that they only track 289 ETF's. Go to other ETF sites and you see that they don't include the entire universe of U.S. ETF's either. This is even more problematic as new, important ETF's are added.
I have been tracking U.S. ETF performance on a daily basis since the beginning of 2007 using the published data at WSJ.com which I find to be the best out there. On a daily basis they make available a spreadsheet download of all the actively traded ETF's for the day (if an ETF has no trading volume its excluded unfortunately). Usually this amounts to over 400 U.S. ETF's. They also include any new ETF issues as they are introduced (assuming they have trading volume).
One thing I would really like to see (in addition to daily, weekly, monthly and YTD performance) is the ability to click and drill-down on an ETF to view its underlying component securities (if relevant) and see the price performance on the day, week, etc for each security making up that ETF. Today, you have to go to each individual ETF provider's site to dig up the holdings of each ETF, a very time consuming, if not impossible, task to complete on a daily basis. Adding RSI, money flow and other indicators to the ETF performance display would be nice too!
