Week #03 (2007-01-20) in Review (INITIAL)
I am still too sick to finish a complete WIR, so I decided to spend an hour on it before returning to bed. If I feel up to it, I'll spend another hour tomorrow and publish an abbreviated FINAL version.
Remember that this was a shortened week in U.S. markets, so the "weekly" data, in some cases, includes data from the previous week. However, I am not up to investigating whether data here is totally accurate or not, so please consider that possibility.
The markets are at an important juncture where Colin Twiggs' Money Flow indicators (ie, a volume-weighted version of the Relative Strength Index indicator I use) are showing clear signs of impending weakness in equity markets.
But the key to Twiggs (www.incrediblecharts.com) is to take note of the key primary and secondary support and resistance levels of the various markets, and to take action as these points are intersected (ie, market reversals), with the reversing trends and cycles moving in your favor.

As readers know, the Cara 100 includes four international telco's: China's CHA and CHL, and Russia's MBT and VIP. On Friday, China Mobil (CHL), the largest mobile telephone service operator in China announced it added 4.83 million customers in December, up from 4.67 million new subscribers in November, raising the total number of subscribers to 310.23 million.

I recall recommending this stock less than two years ago at about 15. It is now over 45, and the PE multiple is over the top crazy. CHL is a great company, but shareholders now hold all the risk. In order to see how much risk, all you need to do is look to the peak of the last long-term cycle when the PE multiple reached into the same nosebleed territory.

International Equities Review
Three weeks ago, in referring to the BRIC, I wrote: "These extreme moves on the upside are unlikely to continue should there be any central bank tightening. If there are moves higher like that in the BRIC markets (Brazil, Russia, India and China), then Gold will soar."
If you have been watching, the gold price has moved up quickly since then. I remain convinced that M3 is skyrocketing and that central banks are more concerned about relative currency levels that best support the balance of trade than they do with the prospects of inflation.
So, traders of BRIC markets are nervously awaiting sweeping changes in central bank policies, but until discipline is shown by the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank, I think this game continues for a while. I think it only stops when gold breaks above 700-730 (possibly peaking at 750), which I expect in the next couple months.
But one place to be watching is the higher-risk BRIC equity markets, which are usually the first to demonstrate changes in big money flow.
Talking Heads suggest that Commodities are in a Bear, which would be borne out by Canadian, Australian, Russian and Brazilian equity markets peaking ahead of the technology and manufacturing based equity markets, the U.S., Japan and Europe.
And we have to be watching to see if the $USD can break up through the falling MA lines (which represent technical resistance) at this point. My take is that the Euro and Cdn Dollar and the commodities prices are ready to resume the Bull, which will result in another ratcheting up of U.S. Treasury yields " like we saw on the 11th January " and that is another negative for the U.S. banks and technology and telco and utility sectors.
So, we have to be watching the comparative relative strength of these foreign markets and the $USD and commodity prices to see how far this global equity Bull can continue.
Econoday's Ann Picker has a weekly write-up that places the focus for change on the Japanese markets and the policies of the Bank of Japan and the government, which seems to be in control of BoJ policies at the moment. Her report is constructive as well as wide ranging.
That situation is, in my view btw, no different than what has happened under the present Bush Administration, following the departure of Greenspan, and in the months leading up to it. It will be interesting to see if the Democrat-controlled Congress will demand changes.
Incidentally, I was much impressed by the questioning of Ben Bernanke by new Independent Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, apparently a Democrat in socialist clothing. I was also impressed by Bernanke's performance in front of this committee, which I rated as his best to date.

Wrap up:
I'd like to thank MarkM for his devoted commentary (over 1300 items). Regular readers know of his successful background in law and business, and his commentary is one of the reasons why they like to come to this site. On Thursday, MarkM merely stated the obvious, which is that I am not in good shape and I have no intention of responding to urgent pleas of nervous traders.
But, after making an effort yet again to support me, his character was attacked by another reader. I am really disappointed in this case because I happen to know the personal background and have a high regard for MarkM's assailant.
I have said this before: if you wish to lay into me directly, do so, but attacking other readers is unacceptable, and, like profanities, I will not permit it. If we happened to working together on a trading desk, I could break the ice with humor. Unfortunately this is the faceless, virtual Internet, and I am not in a particularly jovial mood at the moment, so stuff like that happens.
I say this again: None of us has all the answers, but some of us have opinions that if expressed freely in a forum like this (while open to challenge) can add to our understanding of markets. So the key is to respect the person, but challenge the comment, if you want, with reasons that will help the rest of us.
Goodness knows, we all need help, and if I may say, it is the finger-pointers and attack dogs that need the most help. When they also become self-centered commenters, those are the readers who are welcome to go elsewhere. The giving ones like MarkM we need -- as I am sure you will agree.
Enjoy your day. Wherever you are in the world, I have a feeling we are on the same page.

Discourse
I hope MarkM outright ignores the calumnies of other readers. I personally don't recall ever reading an opinion of his that was not helpful in some way.
As for Bill: I'm sure most of the readers here realize that this is a free blog, a forum, and simply meant to provide a place where novice (me) and experienced (MarkM & Bill) traders can share strategies and opinions about the markets, finance, and economics. As much as I'd love to be hearing hourly comments by Bill on all market events, it's just not feasible or fair, and neither is asking him to write while he's ill.

I must admit that I tend to read MarkM's contributions as they are among the most imformative I see anywhere.
Hope you are back in the saddle soon Bill.

Bill, I'm glad that you at least can tell us you are too sick to blog. I'm sure that your DR gave you heck for waiting so long to come in. Please make sure that you stay on your meds and follow all orders. Pneumonia can be deadly--and unfortunately there are more than a few that wait too long and their system is overcome. (Don't mean that to sound like a finger wag!)

Bill, hope you get better soon as well, not a bad blog entry for someone too sick to blog!!
Here are the top 10 groups (out of the 273 I track) in breadth for this week in trading in case anyone is interested:
AUTOMOTIVE - Auto Manufacturers - Major
AEROSPACE/DEFENSE - Aerospace/Defense Major Dive
MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION - Cement
XLE (SPDR Energy)
MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION - Lumber
MANUFACTURING - Small Tools & Accessories
REAL ESTATE - REIT - Office
REAL ESTATE - REIT - Retail
CONSUMER DURABLES - Appliances
WHOLESALE - Medical Equipment Wholesale
Have a Good Weekend Everybody,
Ralph
Bill,
Every Sunday I look forward to your WIR. I'd rather read WIR in the future than have you finish this WIR and make yourself worse. I've seen too many succumb to pneumonia. Please continue with your rest, finish your medications, drink lots of fluids, and realize it takes longer than you think to recover. But you will get better, it just takes time.. I bet by next week you'll write your usual wonderful WIR, if you just take it easy.

Hi Bill.
Thanks for your time and effort - but believe me that most of the readers would rather wait for the Blog and prefer to see you getting the full rest required to get well.
I am amazed and shocked rude comments made by ingrateful reader towards MarkM and his expectations from a free Blog like yours - You provide an enormously useful and high quality Blog and lot of experienced readers share their comments here and it all goes to show the inherent goodness of humans. But then once in a while few greedy and cheap readers make entry and kind of try to spoil the fun!
Get well soon!

Well this doesn't look like a good way to start the week...
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez moved Sunday to take over Compania Anonima Nacional Telefonos de Venezuela, known as CANTV, without first compensating its U.S. owner, Verizon Communications Inc., and said the government won't pay market price for the telecom, according to media reports.

I wonder if it's prudent to let go of some shares in pre-market trading to pick it up at a lower price with the reaction that's bound to be created.

Bill, I had pneumonia when I was in my late 20's and it hit me pretty hard, so I can't imagine having it at retirement age. Listen to your doctor, take it seriously. Don't worry about us. As far as Mark M, I have a note by my computer, "Listen to Mark M", as he has proven his insight to me, and I want to thank him for his contributions to the learning I gained from this sight. Bill I will keep you in my prayers, and I know that prayer changes things. John C

let's respectively give the crystallex propoganda a rest for this week. CANTV is not related to Crystallex or GRZ. Confiscation/nationalization of telecom and tv is not new news. See link http://tinyurl.com/2k36tk.
I just spent the entire weekend detoxing from the u.s based media bashing KRY.
Remind you, not 1 U.S outlet has picked up on the above latin american article by reuters.

I'm in the middle of Ken Fisher's new book, The Only Three Questions That Count. Fisher uses a GDP-weighted international yield curve for some analysis. Does anyone know where I can find an up-to-date international yield curve online? Or do I need to create it myself? Thanks, guys.

Bernie Sanders is in fact a Socialist, not a Democrat, although he votes with the Democrats.
Get better soon Bill.
