Seeking a title, Mon., Jan. 29, 2007, 12:45 PM
I have received close to four dozen suggestions for a name to my book. Here are 15 of the ones I thought might make a short list.
Please select your top idea(s) from this list (like 2, 8, 12), which ought to make it easy to do a list reduction to say the top six that I will consider further. Please comment here or send direct mail.
Remember; the title has to stand out on the shelf at a bookstore.
1. "Cara's Crystal Ball: Trading Profitably in an Uncertain World"
2. "Cara's Crystal Ball: Toolbox of a Trader Wizard"
3. "The Market's Dance: Learning to lead or follow"
4. "Dancing with Capital Markets"
5. "Dancing with Wall Street"
6. "We Trade Prices not Companies"
7. "Trading Prices, Preserving Capital - 30 years experience from the CEO of two trading houses"
8. "Trading Prices: Bill Cara's Guide to Profitably Riding the Ebb and Flow of the Financial Markets"
9. "Taking Down Wall Street: Bill Cara's Populist Guide to Markets and the Factors That Move Them"
10. "Saying No to Wall Street: The Cara Approach to Capital Markets"
11. "The Cara Way: Trading & Investing Wisdom for Wealth Creation and Preservation"
12. "Cara: Mastering the Trade"
13. "Playbook of a Stock Operator (or Trader Wizard)"
14. "Wizdom of the Trader Wizard: Bill Cara on Capital Markets, Investing & Social Equity"
15. "Wizdom of the Trader Wizard: A Neo-Capitalist's Guide to Investing"
Thanks.

Color me dull if you must, but does "Capital Markets and Social Equity" not say it all about Bill's areas of insight and interest?

“Saying No to Wall Street: The Cara Approach to Capital Markets
Thats a winner.
I would also cross reference book titles above against those on amazon. see what comes up in search results. the content i am sure will be golden, but we also want to make sure it is the "best selling," as well as the most informative.

5, 13, and 14 are my favorites.
5: if you want to catch attention
13: if you want to sound technical / textbook
14: if you want to sound like a university lecturer
I find that too many of the names are long and wordy (as is 13, but I still like it). I prefer the names that don't have "Cara" in them, since your name will clearly be on the cover anyway.

I like the "Trade like ..." series and I think you could have "Trade like Bill Cara" as the subtitle or title. I think most people come to your blog to see how you are trading!
#9 stripped down and changed:
"Surviving on Wall Street: Guide to Markets and the Factors That Move Them"

9, 5 or 8
Fazelli may have a point when he wrote "I prefer the names that don't have "Cara" in them, since your name will clearly be on the cover anyway."
A few selections may be more appropriate for the title of a section or chapter.
(If your publisher thought you had a cult before, wait till he sees the response to this posting)

I also like the new #9 as proposed by Eternum:
"Surviving on Wall Street: A Guide to Markets and the Factors That Move Them"
So scratch 14 as a vote, and add #9 please :)
To me, 5 and 13 are just CATCHY!!! "Dancing with Wall Street" is poetic, and "Playbook of a Stock Operator" makes it sound ENERGETIC, ACTION PACKED, RISKY, and FUN... like professional sports.

How about: Cara: Outsmarting the Smart Guys.
Of the list, I like #2 best.

How about combining #10 & #3 to be:
“Saying No to Wall Street: The Cara Approach of learning to lead or follow
If it has to be one of the 15 you list then #10
10. “Saying No to Wall Street: The Cara Approach to Capital Markets

11 (though maybe The Cara Method... instead of Cara Way)
Also 9, 10
I think the title should focus on making and preserving capital, maybe highlighting your approach vs. "slice-and-dice" French/Fama, etc.

FWIW, I sent the titles to an avid reader, who is not active in financial markets and does not know BillCara. She selected # 2.

Hi Bill,
I like #1 and #4 combined:

I made a wish today, that you stay healthy and strong! Cheers

Hi Bill and Bill Fans...
Glad to see you are on the mends Bill!!! May your recovery keep you healthy going forward! Stay well!
Regarding a title... I think your blog teaches me:
1) "Understanding the Sell Side of Wall Street"
2) "Protecting AND Growing Your Capital Without the Help of Wall Street Analysts".
None of the 15 titles speak about the way to perceive the sell side like you have shared with us so regularly in this blog. I agree it should be simple and not wordy. In the end, the title of your book will depend on what you are trying to offer us.
You have taught me the road signs to look for (fundamentally and a bit technically) to preserve and grow my capital. Thank you!

Some combination of 9 and 10.
Rather than "Taking Down.." what about "Deconstructing Wall Steet: A Guide to Markets and the Forces that Move Them" ?
"Saying No to Wall Street" is still a powerful notion, however.
Rather than "Surviving on Wall Steet", I prefer:
"Surviving on Main Street" as more relevant to your readers. The Wall Street guys are already pretty good at surviving!

I also like "It Is No Longer A Buy and Hold World, And Here Is Why" by Bill Cara

Just kidding about the "IV"
Have fun with your book, that's the essential part!

So many proposed titles sound like any other stock market book. Your distinctive ideas warrant a distinctive title.
How about: Cara's Way - Trading Top Stocks.

As anyone who visits my blog knows, I read a lot of books. To get my attention I would combine 9, 13, and 11 to make:
"Wall Street Playbook: Trading & Investing Secrets Which Create Wealth AND Help You Keep It
or the more direct
"Wall Street Playbook: The Secret Tools You Need For Maximum Wealth Creation
The word "Wall street" because it is the symbol of the market...
The word "playbook" because the master called it a game (see adam smith in The Money Game) and thats how most people look at it...
The word "secret" or "tools" because that is what most people are looking for....
The word "You' needs to be in it too speak to someone as they walk by...
If the book is going to be mass marketed, unless the name Bill Cara is "known" ala Buffett, Cramer, Soros, etc to a wide mass audience..I would leave it off the title because it won't draw anyone.
and
If you use my title just send me a copy of the book and we will call it even. :)
Not that you asked but numbers 1 thorugh 6 make great chapter headings and not book titles.
How about:
Outsmarting the Smartest Guys in the Room
This way people will find you on a search for either book, and you really are about overcoming the hype of the street. I wonder if there are copywrite restrictions -

Hi Bill,
I have a couple of comments. Stay away from dissing wall street in the title. That's not what you are about. You are about social equity (which wall street does not contribute toward but that's besides the point).
If fact, I would not pay wall street any heed because we are embarking on tan era of global financial markets. Is the US financial system not becoming a pyramid scheme in the realm of global finance? Who really cares about wall street? We just want to make money! ;-)

Personally #9 was good to begin with but this is much better: "Surviving on Wall Street: Guide to Markets and the Factors That Move Them"
I also liked #10.

My vote is number (1).
I like the simplicity. When browsing through a bookstore, it can be overwhelming. The first title is easy, straight forward. It should appeal to nonprofessional traders (if that were your audience).

A title is targeted to the projected audience. The target is investors who have experienced how the deck is stacked against the individual investor. The target is mad as hell, and looking to change the status quo. To level the playing field. And that's what (I believe) your about, Bill. So I propose the following title.
Investing 101:
Understanding Market Manipulation
for
Profit & Social Equality.
Whatever the title, I look forward to its release.
Thank you, Bill.
And get healthy, we need you with us.

ALOHA !!
Bill ... nice to see you in the mix again!
All the titles leave out the common denominator that all the minions of the World seek ... "money". There is a war on between the banks and the common man, the citizens ... "We The People". All participants in this "War" come to view the acquisition of money as "financial freedom" and in a way that is what all men seek "Freedom" ... not so much "money" but what that money buys ... "Freedom"!
Perhaps a take on "The War On Terror" like "The War On Money" or "Money Wars ... Financial Freedom For The Common Man". It is "The War For Financial Freedom" ... The banks want control over governments and its peoples ... credit and the stock markets are their "fleecing" tools ... it's just that simple and its always been that simple since money times began.
"Breaking The Banks That Bind You" ...

This popped into my head has I reviewed your list--anything with the following
"Cara Clarity"
