Goldminer picks for 2007, Fri., Jan. 12, 2007, 8:48 AM
2006 was a year where gold prices and Net Asset Values (NAV) grew faster than the share prices of most of the goldminers. 2007 will be the year of earnings growth, which will be the driver behind rising share prices for many gold stocks.
In 2006, the NAV premium to share price for the senior and intermediate goldminers was just +4 pct, but throughout 2004 and 2005, it ranged from +25 pct to 27 pct. With the changing earnings picture this year, I expect prices to pop back to normal levels.
Of course, in 2007 there will be rising operating and developing costs (energy, labor and materials) that the gold mine operators will have to control.
In the past 24 months, the industry saw a number of larger companies acquiring smaller ones, and paying substantial premiums. There was Goldcorp and Glamis and before that Glamis and Western Silver. Also, Gold Fields bought Bolivar (Venezuela) and Western Areas, and IAMGOLD acquired Cambior. Yamana acquired Viceroy. Before that there was Barrick and Placer Dome. I expect more of the same this year from Barrick, Goldcorp, IAMGOLD and Yamana. Without Pierre Lassonde as President, I don't know what to expect from Newmont.
The place to be in 2007 is not in any of these companies (except probably Yamana) or in the companies with hedged production, like Barrick or AngloGold Ashanti, Minas Buenaventura, Lihir, Newcrest, Aurizon, or Red Back, or in one controlled by a mega-rich Russian oligarch (Polyus) by the name of Mikhail Prokhorov who sits, with at least 20 women today in a French jail cell, apparently accused of being their pimp.
No, the place to be is where the company is going from losses to significant profitability. That list (in alphabetical order) includes:
Agnico-Eagle Mines (AEM)
Alamos Gold (AGI.TO)
Eldorado Gold (ELD.TO/EGO)
Gammon Lake Resources (GRS)
Guyana Goldfields (GUY)
Harmony Gold (HMY)
Hecla (HL)
High River Gold (HRG.TO)
Highland Gold (HGM.L)
Meridian Gold (MDG/MNG.TO)
Minefinders (MFN/MFL.TO)
Richmont Mines (RIC)
Sino Gold (SGX.AX/SIOGF)
Yamana Gold (AUY/YRI)
You might add to that list a couple that are sitting on huge ore bodies and will be in production in two years or so: Crystallex (KRY) and Aurelian (ARU.TO). For the best pure exploration play I like U.S. Gold Corp (UXG). And for pure silver I like Silver Wheaton (SLW). I also like a couple other silverminers, but this is a list of eighteen (18) that I think will do well in 2007 based on professional management, ore in the ground or growing profits.
It's a big list, but, barring any significant discovery, a solid price run in one of them might be sold and replaced by another. This is a list that has to be managed.
One from the list that I like very much is Yamana, which starts trading on the NYSE today btw. But I am expecting CEO Peter Morrone to stay on the acquisition trail, which means dilution. In addition, Peter, who tells a great story, usually has this stock well-priced via promotion, so there is always risk of disappointing results. So, for me, my finger is always close to the sell button on that one.
Here is a list from BMO Research with 2007 estimated earnings based on a gold price estimate (unstated) of, I believe, US$605.

My opinion, which is clearly above most of the crowd, is that the average gold price for 2007 will be US$700, which would push these earnings estimates higher.
ADDENDUM: ok, since you are asking, I do like Kinross (KGC/K.TO) and Pan American Silver (PAAS/PAA.TO) too, on the basis of earnings growth for 2007. There; that's 20 precious metal stocks. I could go on, but I have to cut it off.

Bill, I take it Kinross/Bema is included in the former, not the latter, category.

As a whole, miners were the biggest disappointment of 2006, IMO.
At the beginning of 2006, if you would have told me that gold was going to be up 20% and stocks up 13%, I would have estimated that quality miners would be up 2-3x the gains of gold due to the fact that stocks were up on the year (no downdraft to contend with).
Because of the surprising underperformance alone, miners should have a good year relative to gold (sans stock market crash of course).
Bill, thanks for explaining the why they should go up.

Thanks for your insights Bill.
U.S. symbol for Eldorado is EGO (Amex).

Isn't Sino Gold a contestant for a concession in Venezuela? Do they have a major ore body? I'd think Hugo and Co. might be partial to a Chinese group vis-a-vis North American miners.
BTW, Bill, thanks for this EXTREMELY helpful post. Now, I think one can regard your picks as a basket, and trade in and out of individual stocks in this basket on technical indicators (MA's, MACD, RSI, etc.) Thanks again!

Oops. It turns out Sino Gold is AUSTRALIAN. But, there IS a Chinese gold co. in VZ. Wonder if they have better license prospects, given Hugo & Co.'s desire to cuddle up to China?
Jock
Last summer I came across Shandong Gold Group, which is developing the Sosa Mendez property in VZ. I asked Bill if the Shanghai FLY
had any information on Shandong. Bill posted:
http://www.billcara.com/archives/2006/08/mining_in_venez.html
Unaware of any updated information since that date.
Nice moves today (so far)in the miners--AUY (+6.1%), AEM, SLW, & many others. Overdue considering recent action.
Action in HL overblown with VZ concerns; picked some up in trading account.

Does anyone here follow Great Basin Gold (Amex:GBN)? I know its not on Bill's list but it is a junior explorer, not junior producer.

Noab
I actually own a little GBN, Great Basin Gold.
Kaimu, whom you all know, drew our attention to a private group named Hunter Dickinson (www.hdgold.com). When not cultivating orchids, it appears our friend Kaimu is cultivating good investment possibilities!
He referred to HD Goup as an "incubator", probably a tulip term of art.
At present they are incubating a few junior explorers (NAK,ANO,GBN, TGB among them).
Their track record for picking and cultivating winners seemed a good reason to dig a little deeper.
I decided to wait and watch ANO due to a possible dilution problem caused by a settlement with Pelawan (you can do your own analysis), and NAK was running into some heavy green flak coming from environmental groups in Alaska regarding their possible "disruption" of local salmon habitat. I like fishing for salmon (Atlantic), so that presented some conflict, but GBN and Taseko TGB looked promising.
Suffice to say that GBN was up 4.65% today and 8% since I bought. So far so good.
Thanks, Kaimu.
Rigdon
PS. NAK (Northern Dynesty) is sitting on absolutely humungous proven deposits of gold, putting them in the KRY and Aurelian league.
I am wrestling with my conscience on this one.

Aurizon's production is hedge? As a share holder for the past year, I have seen no data to indicate their production is hedge.

ALOHA !!
You're welcome Rigdon ...
I bought GBN last year at $0.84USD, so far so good!! Anooraq-ANO AMEX is another good one ... 65million ounces of PPR is nothing to sneeze at especially when your pal is Anglo Plat! ANO has been slow moving though and I had to average down at $0.62USD last year, but the potential is still there I believe. Like NAK the deposits that ANO are sitting on are just too big to ignore.
In 2003 I first bought Northern Dynasty-NAK under the US ADR symbol NDMNF for $0.65USD. I sold it out last year after coming to the conclusion that the environmental issues combined with the 2009 final feasability would be a stretch for upward pricing so I sold at $9.05USD ... averaging an annual gain of over 450%.
I also bought another junior in 2003 outside the HD Group stable ... AFlease Gold which is now SXR Uranium One under the US ADR SXRFF. Back then I bought at the pre-reverse split adjusted price of $0.49USD. I sold last year at $10.65USD. After the reverse split I actually doubled my shares because of the US ADR ratio then at 10:1. Extremely profitable at 1400% per annum!
I am now holding one I consider very profitable even at the current prices of $2.74USD although I bought in at $0.34USD back in 2005, which is now running at about 400% per annum. This stock I believe to be another Gammon Lake GRS-AMEX which closed today at $16.13. The name of this stock is ECU Silver ECU.V or US ADR ECUXF.
I have five others that are in a new "incubator" I discovered last year, a sort of mini HD Group operation. One is doing a 2:1 spin-off this month and is currently in a JV with Teck Cominco.
Anybody notice a pattern here? For starters I call it "PILE IN AND HOLD"!! There is a secret to picking profitable juniors and it involves a lot of phone calls, reading and knowing the patterns of share pricing in relation to the discovery process. There are distinct steps and if you recognize the steps you can sell and wait and get back in for higher gains.
Juniors are much different than producers since there is no RBC or Merrill Lynch covering these issues since they are in essence "penny stocks"! You have to network info from company insiders and outside sources.

Rigdon & Kaimu,
Thank you for sharing the great info. It is much appreciated. You have given me a lot of good leads.
One last question - is there a good overview of the discovery process somewhere?

ALOHA !!
Moab ... I just know it ... it was taught to me by my Father and all our mining expeditions while on family vacations! I do recall something close I saw and I will try to find it and post it later here on this thread.
I will share this piece of due diligence that I follow. Who runs the company is a big indicator of future success. Just like hiring an Arabian horse trainer to run FEMA was a dismal failure so too is chosing the right people to run a company. Management is key ... If it is management that will personally answer your e-mails and phone calls then even better.
I always rely on more than just charts to make decisions on future share prices of companies I own. You have to know when to buy and sell but as important ... when to add to your existing position.
Here is a quick due diligence on the future price of ECU Silver that I e-mail out to family and friends ...
ECU SILVER UPDATE
ECU SILVER - ECU.V US ADR ECUXF
Gammon Lake(GRS AMEX) is similar to ECU Silver in its mining location and deposit. On January 10th this year ECU Silver announced one more similarity to Gammon Lake ... the appointment of Dan Kappes as Director. Mr. Kappes is one of the founders of Kappes Cassiday Associates(KCA). They are world renown experts at mining production and mine construction.
When Gammon Lake first hired Kappes and Cassiday to run their mining production it was February 10th 2005. If you look at a chart of GRS their share price was in the low $5USD range at the time of that announcement. Within 12 months
the share price of GRS was $18USD ... about a 350% increase.
If you apply that same time frame and percentage to the ECU Silver announcement it translates to an ECU Silver share price of over $9USD within 12 months.
You have to wonder why would Mr. Kappes want to sit on the board of ECU Silver? I believe he knows ECU Silver will be a big success and he will make a lot of money. 1+1=2 ... Count me in for more!
I am not saying this is a 100% given ... just a trend. Food for thought ... Wait ... MORE than "food" this is "Filet Mignon, truffles and caviar for thought"!!!!

May I be on your family e-mail list? Say yes....please.
Your results are truly spectacular, and more importantly your logic and willingness to "do the work" is inspiring.
Good on you, mate.
Kudos Kaimu.

How about Century Mining? CMM.V If Richmont is a buy, then CMM is a steal.
100,000 oz producer, mainly from their Sigma-Lamaque mines in Val d'Or.
Grossy undervalued based on any metric one cares to use. Only a $65MM market cap -less than many rank explorers, let alone a company with a 5,000 tpd mill and open pit and underground mines in operation in Val d'Or.
Have about 5MM ounces of resource. About 750,000 as reserve. Are moving their San Juan mine into 43-101 compliance in a few months as they complete confirmational drilling to support an earlier pre 43-101 German estimate prepared in 2002 indicating about 1MM ounces.
Market cap is an absurdly low $65MM at current prices. Name a single 100,000 ounce producer that can significantly grow production in the next few years at anywhere near that price. Check out their recent Investor Presentation (and the share price is 10% lower since that was prepared a couple of weeks ago) http://www.centurymining.com/documents/Corporate%20Presentation%20(Jan%2015%202007).pdf
Q3 was CMM's first profitable quarter since restarting operations in 2005. Their Sigma open pit has generated positive cash flow since it restarted operations. They have spent the money to buy a mine in Peru that they plan to increase production to 80,000 in '08 and are restarting the underground Lamaque mine in Q2.
