Voices and Google and China, Thurs., Dec. 14, 2006, 8:58 AM
After telling you about my young nephew David (www.voices.com), I see he has been generating a lot of buzz around the fact Google is beta testing the new Google Radio Ads service, which they intend to launch in 2007. It connects advertisers with radio station dead air to place ads at low cost.
Google intends to also get into ad production and David feels they are possibly replicating the Voices.com business model. Without asking him, it's possible that David is simply playing a real life "David & Goliath" version in the media. There have been over 400 blog and media items written over this story as a result of his using his own voice. (pun intended, and not bad)
As I see it, getting an item on Techcrunch.com was a big win for him as that is one of the significant tech blogs out there. Here is a link to the Techcrunch item. There are well over 30 comments posted, not all complimentary to David.
After claiming that Google has accounted for a lot of recent traffic to his site, I hope David intends to collaborate with Google and make contact with their execs. There is nothing to stop Google from directly contacting voice talent that appears on his home page to become involved in their Google Radio Ads production, but this is really small dollars, so maybe Google will want to work through him. It could be a win-win.
Maybe Google will want to take a piece of his company, and help him to help them? It just seems obvious to me that if Google intends to exploit the business opportunities in this area, then it validates the Voices.com business model. So David ought to be loving it that Google has moved into this space.
It's also possible that Google competitors (Yahoo! maybe?) may now want to work with Voices.com to compete head-on with Google because certainly there is nothing proprietary about using digital tech to match up radio station dead air with advertising. This is what media buyers do now. Voices.com is an ad production facilitator and is working day and night to build Voices talent.
Check out the video news item that runs here. The Voices.com item is the second from the last item showing, which is a "Pac-man" animation. Click on the screen and let the entire production load up. Then click on the start button at the lower left of the screen. It appears about ¾ of the way across the progress bar on their player. You can click on the bar at that location to open the video at that place without waiting for it to get there. Move back and forth until you find their item (The Voices.com logo is in the background behind the newsreader)
Readers, let me know what you think. And, while I'm guessing at this, David might wish to listen to the voices of investors who have an appetite for risk. Seems to me, that is something he'd like to hear.
If I was in my mid-twenties and the world's biggest media company was on the phone, or investors, trust me, I'd be listening.
For those who don't know, I changed my name from Ciccarelli to Cara 35 years ago, long before David was born. I explained this in May in a comment I made to my blog article about Italians after referring to the "Gold"man as Gambino Sachs. I see David made a comment to that blog as well (ie, the last one on the page).
I also made a comment in a Nov 29 blog about Voices.com, and I believe it helped David to his biggest sales day ever, or so his father tells me.
Now having a voice not unlike Laslo Birinyi, maybe I ought to be checking out his Voices talent. And, as my Chinese vocabulary is somewhat limited to "yes", "no" and "Happy New Year," maybe I could even find a pro to speak for me in Chinese? (lol)
Speaking of China, isn't that where the big action is taking place in the world today?
Credit Suisse, as usual, has a voice worth listening to. Download Dec 13 2006 CS report on China
With Paulson in China, Bloomberg is telling the story.

David's service will have an interesting impact on telco service companies & voice response systems...
Should help you with an audiobook version of your book too!

Thanks for the CS China report. The coal to oil option was one that I was not aware of. Having missed the great run in uranium, this article gives me an opportunity to revisit the coal stocks.
Thanks
