Platinum miners under the microscope, Wed., Oct. 25, 2006, 2:15 PM
Platinum is an important member of the precious metals complex. There are three platinum miners I have reviewed. But I have to admit, I'm not sufficiently knowledgeable to make bold recommendations.
The three miners are Stillwater (North America), and Aquarius and Impala (South Africa). North American Palladium also produces platinum as a by-product.
I'll give you the data and the links to concise presentations these companies have made (if any) to the Denver Gold Forum in the past three years. At some point I'll review the notes of Wall Street analysts who follow these companies.
First, here is an interactive chart from INO.com on Platinum spot prices. Platinum spot chart (Interactive link)

Bill, fyi. The charts attributed to Aquarius are actually of Apollo Gold. I could only find Acquarius on BigCharts: za:aquarius . But then, I don't know investertech or stockcharts well.

IMO,
Impala is the best choice of the three, based on fundementals. I have no idea what would be a good entry point. I do not own shares.

When reviewing the agreements, before purchasing the stock earlier this year, I found SWC's Russian counterpart operates the largest known global reserves of Pt and the positive fact that comes to light is the guaranteed supply of the PM from Mother Russia to SWC if, for any reason, there may be an interruption or problem in the USA operations, like the Forest fire that shut not only the mine down but most of the state late this summer.
Further, Platinum has stepped up to the jewelry business big time as outlined in the presentation given by SWC at the Denver PM show this summer. So this stuff is not only found in eliminating pollutants from your vehicle but worn around fingers and necks of many better looking stockholders ;)

A new source of platinum buying is by the new middle class of China. Perhaps it is investment hording and perhaps for jewellery, but the people I talk to these days are telling me this is happening. So yes, I agree with C.Note.

Readers may want to know that Norilsk Nickel (controlled by a Russian oligarch) purchased what may amount to control in Stillwater:
