Econoday and the importance of people, Wed., Oct. 18, 2006, 8:12 AM
"MarkM" caught this item before me. He wrote a couple times, in the blog and to me personally, asking what was going on at Econoday, my favorite source of economics. I didn't follow through with the typical Cara audit until today. ADDENDUM
First, MarkM opined, and I felt it, that Econoday has shifted radically their position from one of objectivity and independence from Wall Street to where they seem to have joined the Wall Street crowd. MarkM even tied it down to the focus on Evelina Tainer.
Now I don't know Evelina personally, but I admired her work, and in phone calls and e-mails with the owner of Econoday, and in my blog, I made that known.
This morning, because it was bugging me again that Econoday's position seems to have taken their ship onto the rocks, I decided to audit Tainer's work, or in this case her absence.
I discovered that her "Short Take" column was taken over by Mark Pender on April 24, and later by Mark Rogers. Tainer's more important work, "Simply Economics", which is a weekly summary, was last done by her on May 19. As of May 26, Anne Picker assumed control of this report, and her byline changed to Chief Economist, which was Tainer's former job.
I have no clue what happened here " maybe I'll phone " but, I hope Evelina is ok. Like MarkM I miss her work, and discount the material that Econoday is now publishing under Ms. Picker, or the Simply Economics report's current writer, Mark Rogers.
It doesn't have that same ring of objectivity and independence to it.

Tim sent me the following notes:
A goggle search:
Led me to this article published Oct 10, 2006
and another on 9/15/2006
And a site search shows she started publishing around 5/22/06...
Here is a blog entry:
"....Growth in that category, [Evelina] Tainer [the Employment Security Department's chief economist] said, generally reflects the overall health of the state's economy..."
Here is her contact page:
Thanks Tim. Maybe we should send her a note of appreciation.
