Atonement, reconciliation and looking forward, Tues., Oct. 3, 2006, 12:33 PM

It did not surprise me that I received the following mail last evening from "StocksOptions".

"Spent more time in Temple on Yom Kippur this year than at any other time since I was a kid. I feel a sense of spiritual renewal. Sometimes your writings come off as "corny" in their idealism, yet, the more I read, the more I'm hooked."

You might recall how I had to ban StocksOptions. You see, people can call me pretty much whatever they want, but anti-semite? " please don't go there.

In any case, soon after I banned him, we had a useful dialogue, so much so in fact that yesterday's mail was just confirmation that all is well between us.

It usually is you know if people make an effort to communicate.

Yesterday was Yom Kippur.

When I was much younger I attended a religious university " Waterloo Lutheran U., which was the name before the Government of Ontario changed it to a publicly-sponsored university, and changed the name to Wilfred Laurier U. " ostensibly after a famous Canadian Prime Minister, but obviously a matter of sticking with the initials WLU.

In my freshman year at the School of Business, I had a compulsory course called World Religions " we called it a "bird" course because I think the pass rate was 100-pct if you showed up at the final exam " but I enjoyed it to the point I think all universities in all countries should have it on the curriculum.

You simply cannot communicate with another person unless you can appreciate their make-up. Without effective communication, there will be a lack of respect arise at the first sense of stress. That's our biggest problem today.

With Yom Kipper, University and Business Schools in mind, I thought I'd take the time to let you in on the work of the Student Investment Club at Brandeis University, which is a wonderful school in Boston (Waltham MA), not far from Harvard. This group of students, all of whom will be recruited by leading Wall Street firms, is off to a good start. In the latest Newsletter, they have a look at Costco (COST) as an opportunity to protect portfolios from the impact of a recession in the next year in the U.S.

In the BCM Newsletter #2, the team looked over Cara 100 Canadian uranium producer Cameco (CCJ), deciding to pass because of a 27 PE.

Students today will tomorrow be leading analysts, advisors, traders, and financiers working for the Goldmans, Lehmans, Merrills, and so on. I think it's important for the industry to keep an eye open for the nuggets and gems that are being polished on campus today.

Including Brandeis, I have had a number of student investment clubs contact me " from different countries " and I have been willing to try to add value where I can. I figure that a few of them will one day become heads of HB&B, gnomes and the like, and I'd like them to remember how I tried to help all the People. :-)

It's one of the reasons why writing this blog is so much fun.
