Toronto's Caribana 2006 was a smashing success, Mon., Aug. 7, 2006, 6:54 AM
The weather was so perfect, I think the organizers will find that over 1.25 million people turned out to the Carnival parade. The sight of so many people was awe-inspiring. All of them having a great day enjoying this local festival of Caribbean culture.
From the Toronto Star:
Organizers said as many as 1 million people were expected to turn up for the parade from all over the continent. Bob Kunst is one in those million and he came all the way from Miami Beach to dance in the parade. "I think I'm an avocado," said Kunst of his bright green outfit, which amounted to little more than a beaded headdress, Roman-style collar and really short shorts.Kunst is a bit of a Carnival addict. "This is my eighty-third," he said, adding that he's been to most of the major Carnival parades on the continent. He said Toronto's Caribana Carnival is the next best thing to Trinidad's.
"Every time I come here, I'm just overwhelmed by the magnificence in this city."
I tell you it was so good, I hope the organizers have many more people next year.
The color and costuming and music is one thing " and it's all quite beautiful " but the thing that I find most remarkable is the cultural pride and joy of the great masses of people from so many different countries throughout Central and South America and Western Europe as well as the Caribbean.
Yes, at times the world seems to evolve around the news of warfare and the ups and downs of capital markets, but this annual festival of well in excess of one million people represents a classic definition of humanity and social equity.
Here are a few of the hundreds of photos (and video) I took from inside the organizer's tent next to the judging stand.
