Blog survey results, Thurs., Aug. 17, 2006, 8:45 AM

It took some doing to go through the many comments but the readers have clearly spoken. Now I have to follow through.

Here are the summaried (edited) notes from "Raul", who helped me in a major way do this survey and study the results.

Quite a bit of users want nothing changed, they come for the content of your messages, and quite a few also wish some improvements to the website design. I think a slightly more modern web site can accommodate most of the desired changes, which are:

1. Easy access to CARA100 table showing current prices, RSI, MACD, and some indication of the current zone (accumulation, neutral, distribution)

2. Better navigation and menus. Many users find the messages too long and difficult to scroll through.

3. Better search capabilities, users commented that currently it is difficult to locate past messages

4. Downloadable WIR, text only version of WIR.

5. Easy access to each company information on the CARA100: selecting a company from the list will bring a page with all the available research and reports, prices.

6. A forum for Q&A

If the site is to remain a blog (as opposed to a financial site), then perhaps only small changes should be made, and others made slowly with time.

I ("Raul") would like to see a modern, simple and attractive site, more a la Google than a la Yahoo, with front page links to the items above (CARA100, research material, WIR, forum etc.). I think you can keep posting your own messages and only Pros recognized by you can comment, while regular users use the Q&A forum (which is answered by anyone, including Pros). Later the site could migrate to a portal (getting more Yahooish and Googlish).

Someone suggested a real-time chat session. This is something I have participated in the past, through their browsers, users ask questions, they are queued, and the host answers. Users see the answers in real-time. It's great.

Someone suggested an indication of where we are in a market cycle, bull/bear, sector rotation, interests up/down. This would be awesome - if feasible. I wonder if some sort of circular chart can be made indicating where we are.

Points 1, 2 and 6 will be addressed.

For point 3, I'm hoping to have an archive list of all articles that could be searched by (i) topic (ii) keyword, and (iii) date. The current keyword search facility is limited because of the structure I set up for the articles. I need some volunteers help me re-organize all that information and put in tags that facilitate quick and effective searches.

Point 4 (Week In Review) shows the need the WIR must be tagged with searchable tags for sure, and hopefully I can get it out in (i) pdf format and (ii) text-only format (with links to charts). The latter would help the 6 pct of readers who are on slow speed.

I have already started on point 5 because it is so needed, but I need a volunteer who would become the keeper of the Cara 100 list. I get a lot of 3rd party research I'd like to link to this Cara 100 list, but I just don't have the time to produce the links, and maintain the file up to date.

The real-time chat session is something I'm not going to do on this blog because it would put me on a time leash. I could not commit to a schedule. But there may be alternatives. I'll think it over.

The final point is something I tried to start a couple months ago. For the Cara 100 link in the top nav bar, you used to see at the bottom a tab (not linked) for Point of Cycle. Although this is going to become one of the primary features of my free blog, I just haven't managed the project properly. I turned it over to somebody 6 weeks ago with an expectation of getting the mock-up in two weeks. I haven't heard back and haven't followed up due to other factors. But I shall.

Anyway I am pleased things are moving forward and that no rocket science is involved. What the readers have indicated would be desirable is all doable.

But the best was the overwhelming support for the blog, which is what "Raul" said: "(Most) users want nothing changed, they come for the content of your messages".

As matters settle down for me in the next month, I intend to get back to writing more " as well as less on each message.

Thanks again to all who participated in the survey, and who read the blog.

"Raul" has introduced some new ideas. Please feel free to comment here as you wish.

Bill -- Thanks for the effort. I agree with Raul. Most people, myself included, come for the content. I would rather you kept up the instruction/commentary than get bogged down in providing charting services that we can obtain elsewhere. If you have the time and inclination for it, great. If not, the wisdom is what brings most of us back on a daily basis.

Ditto what EJStockman said...although I like the potential changes put forth, I'd rather see incremental enhancements rather than a major overhaul of the site.

I was one of the people who suggested no changes. However, the changes suggested by your readers (and compiled by Raul)were both well thought out and intelligent. Most suggested changes seem like they would be extremely beneficial. You and your readers continue to impress. Please keep it going. THANX

Bill, great news! I'm looking forward to the changes to the site. I also think the real-time chat session isn't a good idea. Keep up the good work

i definitely like things the way they are but i look forward to the improvements as well. the idea of having the comments moderated to just include pros, and a separate forum for the plebeians seems a bit antithetical to one of the core premises of the blog here though ;-)

Bill,
First, thank you for all you that you do. You're call on May 8th in particular was important to me and I think many others. I concur with EJStockman. If YOU want to improve things..please know that what you are doing right now is valuable, respected and imho eagerly sought. Change can be great. But, I do not want you to burn out or become over burdened by this blog. I myself am learning to aim lower with my expectations and be happy with results rather than be crippled by unrealistic goals.
Humbling as it is to admit, I am one of the little guys. I may never make it to Bahama nor into the "towers of power" but I am very invested in protecting my own nest egg and not leaving it to "others" to look out for me and mine. You help me do that.
One last comment please, actually a question. Is it helpful to separate "only Pros recognized by you" who can comment? Is not that just another layer of separation and another technical duty to fulfill? Just a thought.
Sincerely,
Gray G. on Whidbey Island, Wa.

Bill
I think there is a lot more "right" about this space than "wrong". PLEASE change slowly if at all. I am sure you know well enough not to try to please everybody. I, for one, much prefer the simple written word than some fancy flashing web page.
Whenever I am sent to one, my BS meter goes way up.

If it ain't broke...

The only improvement I can think of is
to have a way to access most recent posts without having to search privious titles.
Most of the "good" posters (out of the discipline that makes them such) post their remarks under the most appropriate prior ones and/or the title of your original, even though their valuable insights may relate to a broader view.
That forces annal retentives (like me) to search all of your "titles" in order to feel that I am not "missing something".
Do others feel the same?
Could there not be a way to click on pure chronology?
Could save some time.
Thanks for all you do.
So comforting to have a place for "counsel" and comentary among peers (an honest pow wow, if you will)in these so difficult markets.
