Health and fitness, Thurs., July 6, 2006, 2:50 PM

You may have wondered why I haven't been writing as much lately. Well, the doctor's office called to say I needed to have my blood glucose checked again in 3 months.

The high blood sugar level, plus tightness in the chest, and the highest blood pressure reading I have ever had, constant thirst, weight gain, and decreased motivation, are all pointing me in a direction that I need to change something. Fast.

Since I eat properly for the most part, I figure lack of exercise is a factor. So this week, the elliptical trainer that sits four feet from my desk, but has been used twice in six months, gets turfed, and a new treadmill comes in. I do like the treadmill.

And a scale. I need to lose the 30 pounds I have gained in three years.

At least. I need to get to 200.

Years ago, at Dean Witter, I worked with a fellow who added a line to his calling card: "Health is your first wealth". Until you receive the warning signs, however, health often comes second.

In my case, I will change because I'd like to stick around for a while.

btw, I arranged to meet the CEO of Crystallex privately tomorrow afternoon, so I'm only going to write for half a day.

Hi Bill,

It is not just the USD effecting gold. all base metals are up today and gold itself is forming a V bottom vs. the Euro and the yen as well, as I showed here :

Try swimming. It really works for me.

Bill,
Getting those warning signs was a blessing. You're a pretty terrific person for an awful lot of people. If we see you a little less around here for a while, we can live with that, and wish you Godspeed on those 30 pounds.

Go for it! I find I trade better when I exercise regularly; or rather, that don't trade as well if I don't exercise vigorously every couple days.

I fight the same battle regularly; I just won't by bigger clothes and sson they are too uncomfortable to wear and I have to back down.

Seriously I find that having 2 dogs to walk each day through a park near my house is quite helpful. I also joined a gym in November and work out (lift) twice a week, mid days when the market is quiet. After 9 months I can really feel the changes in my body. I don't really enjoy it but feel that it is a must at this point (late 40's) since I spend the rest of my time sitting in front of the computer.

Stay healthy! We need you!!!

Being a computer programmer, I have back pains too.

Whatever may be the remedy you select, please be regular with it. Wish you long and healthy life.

Bill

As a cardiologist and age management physician, I highly recommend Ray Kurzweils book "Fantastic Voyage". It addresses diabetes and the metabolic syndrome and has multiple reasonable and many evidenced based strategies for vigorous health and longevity. Let me know if you need more details.

Bill-
Set treadmill for "brisk walk",
increase heartbeat into its aerobic zone for 20-30 minutes and you will achieve great results.
Stay well!

Like Anil, I also have a "programmer's back". To help with that, I go for long walks with my wife and ride a bike to my commuter rail station.

I really like the walks, in particular, because I'm fond of the company. <8)

Take care of yourself, Bill. Make that a priority. No one will fault you if that means fewer posts.

I lowered my Triglycerides by taking fish oil pills plus walking at least 2 or 3 miles a day. I am fortunate to be a 44 year old with high metabolism.
I am 6' 5" and weigh a whopping 190. Even lightweights get high blood pressure.

Bill -

I've been passively reading your blog for some time now, but this comment about your health prompts be to sign up and contribute. You should read the book by Dr Richard Bernstein "Diabetes Solution ..." - at least read the reviews on Amazon. Bernstein advocates a low/no carbohydrate diet which works for me. Exercise is also crucial - my best results have come from water aerobics in an organized class.

Best of luck - yours is the first blog I check on, and generally the most useful.

Another vote for Ray Kurzweil's Fantastic Voyage. Ray beat type 2 diabetes. It's the best summary yet of today's research on nutrition & health, and also advocates blood testing for which nutrients are failing to get into the bloodstream, and supplementation guided by test results. Also enlightening is Ray's conclusion that by middle age we ALL have significant genetic defects (SNP's) which inhibit the body's uptake of nutrients and call for suppplementation. If Ray is weak in any area, it's exercise, to which he dedicates 1 brief chapter. I thinnk it's because he doesn't LIKE to exercise. But we ALL need to find a form of exercise we DO like and follow it regularly. If Fidelity is right in projecting US$200K in out-of-pocket health costs in retirement for a US couple age 65, then nutrition & exercise are probably even the best FINANCIAL investment we can make !
