Changes ahead for Bahamas, Fri., June 2, 2006, 7:30 AM
Yesterday afternoon was a challenge for me. I knew it was coming (I have a crystal ball after all!), but it was sad nonetheless.
A week ago I told you I had postponed my scheduled June 5-8 trip to Freeport and Nassau in The Bahamas. The reason became clear yesterday when a fine man, my friend, Julian Francis, was required to resign his post at the Grand Bahama Port Authority.
Julian Francis will go on to accomplish much in his career, unblemished in any way by his experience in the private sector in the past year, following a sparkling job as Governor of the Central Bank of Bahamas for the prior nine years.
His GBPA replacement will be announced following a board meeting on Tuesday, and after a month on the job the new man will be ready to tackle new projects there like my own " a Trader City in Freeport for buy-siders like me.
And then I'll return to Freeport to advance this project under new leadership at GBPA, and I'll also be visiting with government in Nassau to discuss their plans to advance the sell-side (banking, mutual funds, and the like) there.
These are exciting days for The Bahamas, a sovereign country that enjoys one of the longest standing traditions of democracy and British Common Law in the Commonwealth of Nations.
Julian Francis and many others before him laid the groundwork for what I believe will soon become a world stage for major players in the financial markets.
I strongly believe the latter will unfold for reasons I will elaborate when I open the top nav bar link ("Bahamas") on this website sometime, hopefully, in July. But suffice to say at this point is that Bahamas has a pro-business government, a growing wealth, interchangeable USD, 60-mile proximity to the U.S., a terrific climate, clean air, solid regulation of banking and securities trading, no income tax act " yes, zero income taxes " and freedom from the civil strife that terrorizes much of the world today.
Not only is Bahamas a great place to vacation, it is a great place to stay and do business and trading. I hope to join a group that will make it the best place.

Bill, where did you get your crystal ball? I bought mine at Walmart and it only speaks chinese. Anyway, your Bahama project sounds great and I look forward to hearing about it.

Hi Bill -
I would seriously like to join your trading community in the Bahamas...what does one need to do?
I am for real...you were the only one with sensible advice about the PM...and because you said to hold steady, I have though I am down a lot...and I do plan to get into gold mining stocks today...what do you recommend?
