Tipping my hat to an old friend, Tuesday, May 2, 2006, 1:43 AM

At PDAC 2006, I ran into an old friend, Beth Kirkwood, who now is CEO of a small northern Ontario nickel miner by the name of First Nickel (TSX: FNI). Beth used to be the finest legal assistant in Toronto, working for a lawyer who did as many junior mining deals as any probably in the world.

And I'll tell you right now that without Beth, he would never have done so many, or got so rich. I can say this because the man is also my friend. He, I and our wives travelled the entire globe on one trip " Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Paris.

We were celebrating the Genesis Microchip deal I put him into. At one point, a couple years ago, he owned about 23 pct. Rocco probably made $100 million from that one. And he made at least that much from financing and putting a $50,000 grubstake partnership together with Don McKinnon (another friend) who then discovered about $5 billion in gold at three mines that came out of the discovery at Hemlo Ontario.

I wouldn't know how rich Rocco became, of course, but one year at the GNSS AGM, I walked in to a crowded room when Rocco bellowed out "Cara, you made me a rich man." But, I had to admit he was rich before I first met him.

It's true. And then he bought the biggest manor house in south England (I was with him the day he bought it) " and later moved to Bermuda, where he is living large.

A nuclear physicist " I kid you not " who quit because he wanted to become a securities lawyer. And that's what he did.

Actually it was Beth Kirkwood who did most of the work, although Rocco would never admit it.

So there was Beth being interviewed today at 3:15pm by Pat Bolland on ROBTV's "The Trading Desk". You can catch it on replay.

I wish her well. It's a tough business.

But she does know how to do deals and paper them, and she was saying that there are deals in the works at First Nickel.
