May 22, 2006

ROBTV.com has missed the mark today, Mon., May 22, 2006, 10:27 AM

Today in Canada is Victoria Day, a national holiday to celebrate the birthdays of Queen Victoria and the present reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Not that more than a small segment of Canadians care about the former British Empire mind you, the day now represents the long weekend that starts the summer season.

And on every statutory holiday, the national financial TV network ROBTV, does a day of re-runs. That I don't mind because ROBTV is the pinnacle of financial television journalism, and some of these re-runs are absolutely first class.

Take, for instance, the Replay of the Jim O'Connell interview with Barrick Gold's founder and Chairman 78-year old Peter Munk. As I see it, there is no way that CNBC or Bloomberg TV has done anything as good in the past year. But you can make up your own mind on that.

What disappoints me greatly is that today ROBTV is re-running all the best of their work, while their staff is off enjoying the start to summer; but, they are not making the day's TV available on Replay. Replay on the Web will not return until Tuesday.

What a shame. The management of ROBTV ought to recognize that via Replay they are serving to properly educate and inform traders in every country of the world. ROBTV is a Canadian jewel.

For the past hour or two, the Showcase of past interviews by excellent journalist Howard Green covered a lengthy session with former judge James Farley (the Canadian CCAA bankruptcy judge) and Stelco's former CEO Courtney Pratt for example. The back and forth of these discussions made for excellent TV.

Readers often ask me how I rate the individual ROBTV "personalities" and that's unfair because, by definition, we are dealing with personalities.

The ROBTV staff bios show who these people are and the Replays show their journalism craft in action. It's enough for me to point that out, and to simply opine that I find on balance these people do an outstanding job.

As I say, each of these personalities will appeal to a different segment of the audience. I happen to like Howard Green, Jacquie McNish, Amanda Lang, and Linda Nazareth because I think they are the most professional in their interviews and discussions, which is my interest in watching; but really, they are all professional.

For me to say that people like Eric Reguly, Paul Waldie, Danielle Bochove or Jim O'Connell, ought to be second tier in anybody's list would be a personal embarrassment. That's how good at their jobs all of these people are.

I just wish there was a manager there who had made the decision to showcase to the world via Replay today the best work of all of these people.

realy broad selloff again today. Of the 179 us industry groups I watch only 10 are positive on the day and the NYSE has came within 5 pts of having the trading collar imposed again.
ps. looks like the programs just reversed the last pull back. Now 18 groups up.

Nice day for watching..

Thanks for the link to the Peter Munk interview Bill. That was definitely a great piece. However I disagree with a statement Mr. Munk makes in regard to his success having to do with luck. I think Peter Munk is a man with enormous vision whose success was a result of hard work and persistence rather than sheer luck. Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity and Mr. Munk had obviously done his homework.
I nearly bought ABX today after watching this.

As usual you are on top of things again thanks for the tip on Rob TV, I'll check it out later tonight also made comment on Stelco for you archive comments. Your contribution is amazing. Stelco makes me sick every time I hear the name but I set up a site for previous shareholders so we can build a list of previous screwed investors. They are welcome to visit me at shareholdersprotection.ca or Canadian Shareholders Protection Association. Thanks Randy
