Shanghai Fly on Cara 100 component [NTES], Mon., Apr. 17, 2006, 8:33 AM

I added NetEase.com (NDQ: NTES) to my Cara 100 recently, so I fired off a question to Shanghai Fly. His response follows.

I asked:

"Fly, Do you think I made a good/bad choice with NTES? What do you know about this company that readers might find interesting?"

He replied:

"Bill, Well, I'm not sure if you made a good or bad choice. SOHU SINA TOMO (TOMO has a better looking chart) and BIDU all are players in the Chinese internet industry, though NTES appears to be the biggest. But other than that, I don't know too much about this company. Since it went public in the US stock market, it isn't covered a lot domestically."

Well two points jumped out at me from the comments made by my man in Shanghai.

First, the Chinese securities market is relatively immature. While the future is likely to bring major changes, a lot of the initial developments have been started by Chinese-Americans or just Americans who have contacts there.

Baidu (NDQ: BIDU) ("BIDU or Screw U?") is one that I'm not likely to endorse for some time. I didn't like the hype off the top (pre and post IPO). But the others all look interesting. So I think I'll do a regular piece (a Big Picture focus study) on the China Internet marketplace.

Here are the daily charts of this group plus the FXI (a broad selection of 25 China stocks).
