Query about the Saskatchewan oil sands, Wed., Apr. 12, 2006, 3:18 PM

Given that the letter came in from France, to inquire about CanWest Petroleum, which is a microcap stock (OTCBB: CWPC), and the Saskatchewan oil sands, here is the little I know.

I know enough about CWPC to not spend more time looking into it. What I'm saying is that I'm not a speculator. I don't have the time, expertise or focus to win at that game.

There are thousands of high-rated speculations on the boards, and the chatrooms (called bullboards for a reason) follow them religiously. I spend my time in other ways. I trade prices.

So CWPC could be a winner or CWPC could be a loser. I'm nowhere in between because I don't play.

But I am up for trader education. Here is the latest "chat" from the Stockhouse bullboards. I like Stockhouse, been to their offices in Vancouver, once signed a deal with them, and support their work. But I don't have time to check their website. Sorry.

My search for Saskatchewan oil sands turned up this file. Download file

I once travelled across Canada coast to coast, north to south, for 100 days (almost 20,000 miles), in a Winnebago. I got to love Saskatchewan, except I could not find a gas station in the north part when I needed one " despite the fact there are oil wells everywhere. My vehicle guzzled gas at 8 mpg and I was on the road 18 hours a day by 7 days a week.

So I'll never forget Saskatchewan. The place, as best I can describe it, is an endless plain. You drive for hour after hour on a perfectly flat highway and not see much. I never did run out of gas, but my fears of doing so were greatest there.

The people, though, were as nice as any I encountered across Canada. My wife would say they were the nicest. Although their politics is somewhat left-leaning, I found the people actually far more entrepreneurial and independent than I had expected.

How's that for navel-gazing on a quiet day?
