Barrick is now world's biggest gold producer, Thurs., Dec. 22, 2005, 10:48 AM

Peter Munk has achieved his goal of becoming the world's biggest gold producer. Barrick and Placer Dome Group have reached an agreement by where ABX acquires PDG. A beneficiary of this deal is Goldcorp.

Over 35 years ago, Peter Munk was an aspiring entrepreneur in Toronto who controlled a company that manufactured stereo equipment. Clairtone was the name and Munk took shareholders and taxpayers for a considerable sum, which is often how these things go. I was a junior auditor (PwC McDonald Currie) at the time, who was the last person out the door of the empty Clairtone building. I brought the keys back to the office and closed the file. I was just starting to get an education.

Munk went on to develop resort land in the South Pacific, which also did not go so well, before returning to Canada to start American Barrick, which later became Barrick gold.

He's always been a dreamer; he's finally reached his goal. And I am happy for the man.

We should all be so successful, never allowing misfortune to stop us in our pursuit of our dreams and our goals.

Btw, gold today is up +$8.40, to $503.70 (Feb-06 contracts). I'm happy for those who are sticking to that plan as well. Your dreams and goals will be reached.
