Kudlow's lament, Wed, Nov. 16, 2005, 2:37 PM

Gold closed up +$10.10 today at $479.10 (Dec-05). I can't wait to hear Larry Kudlow try to explain to 350,000 proud Americans tonight just what's happening on the inflation front.

I could say maybe Larry needs to bring back his pal Don Luskin. After all it's been a month and a half since Luskin was so arrogant on the CNBC show Kudlow & Company, telling us gold was headed to $430, for sure within the month.

But then, it seems not too many people were taken in by that vaudeville act -- as my friend MoverMike has pointed out.

p.s., Steve (a reader) has sent me this link to Luskin's performance as a money manager. You'd think he'd just drift off quietly. There ought to be a Sunset Law for these people.

And btw, the last paragraph in the cnn.com article is a pip.

Discourse

Well these guys are of the economics is politics school or maybe it's the other way around. Kudlow has written that the only reason for problems with the dollar is that the liberal press bad mouthed.

It scares me because a lot of our right (as opposed to true conservatives) have committed themselves to this notion, that faith in the economy is patriotism, thus the dollar must go up, housing must stay up, it is all part of the Bush economic miracle.

Sadly most of the Democratic opposition seems to have little interest in disturbing indicators. They will jump on Bush if things go bad, but they give no indication that if they ruled they would respond or at least see economic dangers or opportunities for that matter.

The economic perception on the right is typical I'm afraid. Right now two thirds of the public are very worried about the war, based on statistics over half of these had to support it and a considerable number voted for the president, but the right and even Bush think all questioning is coming from liberal Democrats. It doesn't even register with these people that 2 of the biggest critics in the last few weeks, Colonel Wilkerson and General Scowcroft, don't fall into the category of Bush hating Democrats. These people don't even register.

This editing of reality is probably the most fundamental issue in the Wilson case. Are our bureacracies and their perceptions being distorted to support established beliefs? I don't know. There have been worrisome signs and complaints.

I do feel than James Fallows may be right, that the administration literally can not see some of the biggest concerns of the public, such as the fear that Iraq may have weakened our war against terror.

I think people like Kudlow take this kind of perception to the economic front. Bush is good, therefore the economy must be good, all else is wrong thinking.

i fear this may really hurt the nations morale if the economy falls. It could cmpletely discredit the ruling right. I'm not sure the noisier alternatives are better.
