Web stats are blowing the registers, Wed., August 31, 2005, 9:32 PM

I am of two minds regarding my web stats, which just came off the system as the webmaster switched servers to a more capable one. The chart below shows that the hits, files, pages, visits, Kbytes downloaded, etc, are accelerating at an exponential rate.

I don't really know what that means, but it sounds good. :-)

Obviously, I want to thank everybody for the word-of-mouth promotion. I am humbled.

But I am also starting to get a little scared by the enormity of the responsibility I have been setting myself up for.

I write from my heart, as you know, as well as my brain. I hold nothing back. A couple months ago, I wrote that I could get 20 million hits this year. But at this pace, I could, by January, be getting 20 million hits in a single month.

What frightens me is that I manage this website and blog all by myself, in perhaps 30 hours a week, writing, editing (sometimes), uploading all the charts, answering the mail, clearing comment spam, etc. I use a computer worth maybe $500. And because of the generosity of Ticker Host, I have never spent more than the $10 it cost me to buy the domain name for a year.

The time is available because trading is an intellectual activity.

And, now, I could have 100,000 daily readers by year-end, who spend 10 minutes a day on average on the site.

These web stats simply blow the registers. Downloads by readers are already like 100 billion bytes a month. I don't know what will happen by January; I can't even count that high.

I am a serious person when it comes to trading. I am a focused writer when I have the time available. For a retired" person, I expect a lot of myself.

But seeing these stats is still rather unsettling.

I now have a lot of responsibility to a lot of people.

Don't get wrapped up in more responsibility. Your blog as it is now is very valuable to me and I check it maybe 5 times a day (so don't let your head get too big that cuts the # of people) I have one thing to say to you- Thank-you!--------Calkin

Bill - I personally think that is amazing...It might be a little overwhelming, especially at first glance, but if you stick to the game plan (as you are) and take on the battle day by day (i.e. continue what you're good at) than everything will unfold as it should. The numbers are just that - numbers - it doesn't matter if it was 1 or 10,000,000 - /sergio

Cool. Like being a rock star.

Write because you enjoy it and write each post like it is a note to a friend.

Ignore hate mail.

Congratulations Bill! You have been doing something right to have the interest in your blog spreading like so. I would think that the first 10 readers judged your responsibility levels more than enough to start sharing the link with others... so why change?
