More about the RSI technical indicator, Mon., August 22, 2005, 11:16 AM
I receive a lot of mail like what follows. Often I try to answer in the blog, for the benefit of everybody, but Saturday was Week in Review day, and I didn't want more articles going out.
Please, When you say the RSI has gone negative, what exactly do you mean? Is it the slope of the RSI? And which RSI are you referring to, the 7, 14, or 21 day shown on the charts?
Thanks so much for a great site! /Jay"
So, I replied, as follows.
Jay: When the RSI 7 becomes a lower number than the RSI 14 and the RSI 14 is lower than the RSI 21, I say that "the RSI has turned negative".
I look at the Daily (short-term)-Weekly-Monthly (long-term) data together. There are, most often, a number of short-term cycles needed to go negative-positive-negative etc before the intermediate-term cycle will change. Then there are a number of intermediate-term cycles before the long-term cycle reverses.
What I try to do for a major "buy" or "sell" decision/recommendation is to see all three cyclic influences change in the same direction.
But RSI is a momentum indicator. It is nothing more. A price series will change trend, and behave (weak to strong) dependent on that instrument's other influences, such as: interest rates, economic and commodity/forex prices, so you need to integrate that (i.e., the trend and cycle behavior of that data) into your thinking too.
So don't think RSI (or its sister, Stochastics) or any other one technical indicator is anything more than the term states: it's an indicator. It's not rocket science.
Also, RSI for a single equity must be analyzed in the context of the cyclic behavior of other peer group equities, which is why I study GICS sector, industry and sub-industry groups too.
Does that help?
Thank you too, for reading my blog. /Bill"
Jay replied: Yes, your explanation helps very much. And much thanks for a very prompt reply. What a surprise, for I know you are very busy. I hesitated to even respond for fear of adding to your workload, but felt I must to show my appreciation. Thank you again."
You know, I don't even know what country Jay is from, or anything about age, education, experience, etc. All I know is that he/she has a yahoo e-mail address, and that he/she reads my blogs purposefully.
It pleases me to see that people do that.

Bill -
You do a great job with hyperlinks to previous commentary, I was wondering if you could save yourself time and explanation with hyperlinks to a 'Cara' glossary of terminology. i.e. RSI (negative), RSI (positive), etc. The concept could further be illustrated with a screen shot or two.
Best,
