Registering comments with TypeKey, Fri., June 24, 2005, 2:19 PM

As I mentioned in my previous post, I will be implementing TypeKey authenticated comment registration only.

A few people have had technical difficulties creating their accounts with the TypeKey service. Since TypeKey is a third-party website and authentication service, I'm not able to provide much support in getting your accounts set up. However, here are some step-by-step instructions on how to register and some common problems that can occur.

Hopefully this will help you to get registered.

Please go to the following link to register your TypeKey account. [opens new window]

On this page you will see several form fields that need to be filled out with your information. The first few fields are shown below.

The login name and password will be the username and password you will use when you want to post comments on my site (or on other blog sites that use the TypeKey service.)

The name/nickname/handle field is used for how you want your name to be displayed when you post a comment.

You need to use a valid e-mail address since your registration confirmation will be sent via e-mail. You need to click on a link in that (confirm) e-mail in order to make your TypeKey account active.

The next part of the form is the CAPTCHA test. Basically a way to make sure Spam robots can't create TypeKey accounts. This is where most people will have problems with the form.

The letters and numbers that are shown in the graphic are random and you need to enter what you see in the form field. In the example above you would enter cfxypz. The problem with CAPCTHA tests is that people with visual impairments may have difficulty reading the letters.

If you fail this test it will give you another chance to try again.

The last part of the form is for users who have their own website. It gives you the ability to create a TypeKey token so you can enable comment registration on your own website.

If you are still having problems, you can access the TypeKey FAQ or TypeKey technical support.

I hope that helps. If there is still a problem early in July, I will simply defer starting this registration process until I get the problem solved.

Thanks for your understanding. It's a shame that spamsters put you and me through so much unnecessary work, but as I say that's a criminal matter the authorities have to move on.

I think it's a good move. TypeKey accounts are easy to set up.
