Please bear with me. I have been having computer issues to deal with (my fourth blown power supply in three years), and tonight got a major system upgrade, with a new power supply, a different operating system, double the memory, and a new keyboard. If these things are commodity items, why can't systems all be the same? The problem I have now is that I cannot access mail or my Word docs, so that will have to wait until I get some techie help tomorrow. With everything else going on, I haven't been able to answer mail anyway. Sorry. But at least I got the direction of equity markets, USD and gold right -- for today. Tomorrow is a another day.

Bill,

I had so many computers break in past 4 years more or less from power supplies that I taught myself to build and service my own PCs and do it for friends every week. An inferior power supply recently destroyed every peripheral device it was connected to including all my hard drives, floppy etc.. and 4 years of accounting and documents. So I did a little research and found that there are three superior quality power supplies for PCs that provide specifically for over-power and over-voltage protection, are more durable and are generally built with significantly better quality wires etc.. This doesn't mean they won't break but at least they might not break as often and they give you a chance at preserving hardware and data even if the power supply breaks. I started using “Works power supplies because they are available locally but I will be getting Enermax brand next time since my buddies who test PC hardware all suggest Enermax power supplies. Prices are about 20 % more but worth it.

1) Enermax www.enermax.com which can be bought at www.newegg.com . I found no local retailers selling probably it since its margin is low and its good quality.

2) Works power supplies at www.workspower.com which usually can be found at local computer stores has this statement on their website about PROTECTION:

PROTECTION:

Works Power Supply is designed to protect system components as well as itself. The Short Circuit Protection, Over Voltage Protection, and Over Power Protection often times save the motherboard and other vital components from being damaged should something did go wrong.

3) Antec www.antec.com which I only have been told these are very durable power supplies and cost about twice the cost of others and are used for very high end PCs.
