As a good digital camera for travel purposes, I am awaiting delivery of my Kodak CX-7530 5 megapixel camera. It has a 15X zoom (3X optical, 5X digital) w/ 32MB built-in memory (SD/MMC card slot). I also ordered the camera bag plus a model 6000 camera dock, which will help me quickly download photos into a PC.

I had considered the more expensive Kodak DX-7590 model, but my brother-in-law who is a semi-pro (he sells his photographs) set me straight.

When I queried him about the two choices I had narrowed my decision to, he replied:

"Important to consider type of use. These are two different cameras - the 7590 a higher end, larger camera (3.9" x 3.2" x 3.2" and 12.3 oz). Both have the same 5.0 resolution so that's not a factor. The 7530 is more compact (4.0" x 2.6" x 1.5" and 6.7 oz) and much more 'pocketable' or 'purseable' and doesn't require a separate camera bag like the 7590 would. I bought a smaller camera to take to Italy because my larger digital would have been too bulky. If I am going for real 'keeper' shots and have the space, I take the larger (8X zoom) one. If I'm travelling and just looking for memories of the trip, then I take the smaller (3X zoom). Never look at or use the digital zoom - you do better cropping on the PC.

I really favour a big zoom. More flexibility and creativity. You sacrifice convenience with the bigger camera but have more options. If money were not a stumbling block and this was a 'main camera' option for someone who was going to take serious photos, then I would lean toward the 7590. If I were looking for a 'take everywhere' camera with convenience of carrying around and not having an extra bag to fumble with, then the 7530 would be my choice.

Go into a store and hold them both. It has to fit your hand and feel good. You also get a feel for what you would be handling in the types of situations that you would be taking pictures in."

Since everybody seems to be buying digital cameras these days, I thought you might appreciate hearing his non-commercial words of support.
